Personal Device Usage Acknowledgement Form

Required

This agreement outlines the rules and consequences for using personal devices during the school day, based on state law and district policy.

Personal Device Use at School

No Device Use on Campus

Texas law prohibits the use of personal communication devices on school property during the school day. This includes any personal technology device including:

  • Cell phones;
  • Tablets;
  • Smartwatches;
  • Headphones/Earbuds; and
  • Other electronic devices

Devices Must Be Off and Put Away

Personal devices may be brought to school, but should be turned off and stored in your backpack, bag, or locker upon entering campus. Students may use devices after the last bell of the school day. You may also choose to not bring these devices with you to school.

Consequences for Misuse

First OffenseAn administrator will pick up the device for the remainder of the school day and log the infraction in HERO. The student may go to the front office to collect the device after school from 4-4:30PM. Parents will be contacted and students will have a discussion with their administrator.

Second OffenseAn administrator will pick up the device for the remainder of the school day and log the infraction in HERO. The student may go to the front office to collect the device after school from 4-4:30PM. Parents will be contacted and students will have a conference with their administrator and sign the Student Device Usage Agreement.

Third Offense: An administrator will pick up the device for the remainder of the school day and log the infraction in HERO. Parents and students will have a conference with their administrator and sign the Guardian and Student Device Usage Agreement.  Once this conference has occurred, the guardian may collect the device.

Refusal/Non-Compliance: If a student refuses to turn in their device, they will be subject to other consequences:

  1. Receive a referral for insubordination and sent to the office for further disciplinary action
  2. Required to have a daily phone turn-in with a campus designee

In addition, if a device is used for bullying, cheating, or any illegal activity, stricter consequences may apply, including suspension or time at the DAEP. This would include a student’s repeated refusal to turn in the device to administration when prompted.

Exceptions

Students may be exempt from this policy or parts of the policy for medical reasons or if they have accommodations approved by an ARD and/or 504 committee. Families should coordinate with their school nurse and/or the special services department regarding these exceptions.
